An enduring childhood memory for Jessica Nwalozie was seeing her mother dress up in front of a mirror, and how the clothes brought about a change from within. Her collection represents the complexities of a woman’s life. Seemingly simple garments contain surprise elements – when viewed from different angles, they take on a new look. Inspiration for Nwalozie were the patterns on the Vlisco fabric, storytelling and the shape of a mushroom.
’FASCINATOR’ started as a poem, an ode to the strength and complexities of a woman. Woman can be so many things, wear her many crowns, go through numerous obstacles and still come out on top. SULTANA managed to depict these qualities in three ways: handcrafted head pieces (or crowns), five outfits with various silhouettes, and handcrafted drawstring bags highlighting the uniqueness in the patterns and colours of each Vlisco fabric.
A Dimitra Milan painting portraying a story of discovery of oneself and one’s purpose led Jane Efanga to meditate on the way travel helps us break free of everyday life. Her collection ’Escape’ translates the construction of tailoring elements into aspects of a tropical getaway or intrepid adventure. Think bold prints and cut-outs (escape), fringes (palm fronds), and ruffles and relaxed bottom silhouettes (ocean and waterfall). Set and shot in a backdrop of lush greenery to evoke a sense of freedom and openness.
