The launch of Vlisco&co in Accra

Vlisco&co, a new initiative that took place in Nigeria and Accra, aims to bring truly unique events, creating new narratives and diving into the creative future of Africa. The new initiative explores what the Vlisco brand means to the modern generation, but also what they could mean for Vlisco. The Creative Team at Vlisco together with the local creative scene presented a collaborative process, showcasing new ideas from Holland and Africa.

The event was hosted by Vlisco and Nsimba Valene at Untamed Empire. Apart from Vlisco director David Suddens and Creative Director Zara Atelj, other guests of honour where award-winning blogger and stylist Afua Rida, head of ‘Fashion Forum Ghana’ Makeba Boateng, ‘An African City’ actress Maame Adjei and ‘Miss Universe Ghana’ Ruth Quashi. The young and very well-dressed local fashion audience, that felt like a fresh and inspiring creative network, was warmly welcomed by Anita Erskine.

After the power-woman and media mogul shared her excitement about the new young initiative Vlisco&co, singer Adina Thembi entertained the audience with a mind-blowing performance. Where after tv-personality and MC Chris Kata continued to host the rest of the programme, and with her grace and wit, energised the guests for a magical evening.

Fashion designers Ushie and House of Paòn showcased their new collections. Their approach to work with Vlisco fabrics in combination with a mix of different fabric qualities was positively surprising. Their stunning interpretations of classic and modern Vlisco designs, resonated with the young and stylish audience.

What we saw was all in the details. The drawings of the fabric designs were well aligned with their creations’ shapes, which resulted in remarkable fashion pieces. The fabrics were often complemented by surprising contrasting elements such as swinging flappers, velour, lace and embroidery. Many looks featured details that enhanced and emphasized a new side of the powerful female silhouette. Think of peplums, ruffles, flares, boxy shoulders, just to name a few. To top it all off, the looks were accessorized with bold jewellery, designed by celebrity stylist Kelvin Vincent, that made the fashion creations pop.

Though this successful and inspiring event kicked off in Accra and Lagos, it’s only the beginning of many more Vlisco&co events to soon come in other countries as well.
