Green fabrics, grow your future
If you have come to look for a green fabric, it is probably clear to you: the colour green represents growth, whether it is spiritual growth, or the growth of the nature that feeds and surrounds us - the trees, the leafs, the plants that protect our ancestral soils. In fashion, green fabrics stand out as one of the easiest materials to combine, as they not only go with many different colours, but also with virtually any other variation of green itself. At Vlisco.com, we have a wide range of shades ready for you, including crocodile, basil, sage, emerald, pistachio, mint and moss green, seaweed green and seafoam green.
Green heritage
Green fabrics may point at your future, they are deeply rooted in our past. Inspired by Javanese Batik fabrics, Vlisco has been producing green Super Waxes, Java Waxes and Bubble Waxes for over 150 years. Being popularized by West African market women, many of these green fabrics have earned a reputation as ‘African wax’ or ‘African prints’. Together, we created many long standing green fabric classics. Whereas these have been giving names and meaning by those who sold, bought and wore them, other green wax fabrics are yet to be characterised.
Amongst the famous green print fabrics we produced, is the “Pencil”. The name refers to the sharp pencils of Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana. Like his words, and the green and brown triangles portrayed in Vlisco’s Java Print, Nkrumah’s pencils were always well sharpened. Those wearing this green fabric remind people to use their words well, to overcome the many obstacles live tends to throw at us.
“Thought without practice is empty, and action without thought is blind”
- Kwame Nkrumah
Besides green classic wax fabrics like the ‘Pencil’, ‘Angelina’ (a.k.a. ‘Miriam Makeba’), the ‘Jumping Horse’, the ‘Givenchy’ (a.k.a. ‘Dynamite’, ‘Love Bom’ or ‘Wounded Heart’), the ‘Akwadaa bo ngwa’ (a.k.a. ‘Small Butterfly’, ‘Petit Papillon’) and the ‘High Life’ (a.k.a. ‘After the high-life song/dance’), we have a wide collection of fabrics which are yet to be named - by you! What to think of a golden embellished geometric print combining sharp and found figures, a modern version of the traditional Parang Rusak Java, a green block print featuring flowers and mushrooms, or a green wax fabric depicting the love between two souls who are kept far apart? Come to the Vlisco.com online shop and give your meaning to the designs that will shape your upcoming fashion project!
