32 Nigerian designers graduate from the Vlisco Master Class
In light of Vlisco’s Fashion Facilitation system, Vlisco aims to develop and support upcoming tailors and designers to become established professionals through various initiatives. The Vlisco Tailor Master Class supports designers in improving and strengthening their own tailoring businesses. Experienced tailors who were eager to further develop their skills, were invited to apply for the Master Class. A staggering number of 800 applications were received at the end of November.
In collaboration with creative agency Style House, 35 applicants were selected to participate in the Master Class and receive extensive training. In the course of two weeks, they followed classes by skilled trainers and designers, including Araba Stephens, who is the founder of the celebrated Ghanaian fashion label Stylista.
The students were trained in essential crafts for tailors and designers, such as garment construction, finishing techniques and pattern placement. Part of the training was dedicated to the business side of the industry, focusing on communication skills, business etiquettes and customer management. Every class ended with a group project.
In December, 32 trainees graduated from the Master Class, which was celebrated with a graduation ceremony at Ikeja Business Club. The 5 top students who graduated with honours were selected based on their active participation during class and in the group projects, and the high scores in their class work.
Other initiatives of Vlisco’s Fashion Facilitation System are the Tailor Academy and the Vlisco Fashion Fund.
