Java

Vlisco started in 1846 with a handful of Dutch illustrators who created interpretations of Batik prints to homage the ancient Indonesian design. Java was, and still is, renowned for its intricate details and spirited floral illustrations.

Java fabrics carry up to nine different colours, which are traditionally vivid in style and enriched by the special sheen and soft surface of the fabric.

The process of creating Java fabrics is characterized by its precision. By applying high pressure on engraved and punctured screens and rollers, the ink and dye are rigorously pressed on to the fabrics, enabling the smallest details to be printed.

Java-Process Resized

Our most popular Java design is the Angelina, which was created over 50 years ago by Vlisco’s designer Toon van de Manakker, and is therefore a true original Vlisco design. In the 60s and 70s, the Angelina inspired shirt – the dashiki – was born and adopted by African-Americans as a symbol of pride, awareness, affirmation and power. The Angelina and Dashiki have recently made a comeback in fashion and pop culture and are frequently worn by world-famous African American singers.
