Grey fabrics, cleansing shades in a crowded world
Are you looking for a calming, reviving shade, the colour of the ashes that have cleaned and healed so many before us? Look no further. Whether you are looking for a charcoal grey or a cloudy grey, Vlisco has a vast assortment of grey wax print fabric to choose from - including smoke, silver, porpoise, dove, fog and many other shades of dark grey and light grey. Whether you are looking for a grey Dutch Wax to represent wisdom, a grey block print that emphasizes the force of its wearer or a grey Super Wax that will heal the minds of those admiring your latest fashion project, you will find it at Vlisco.com.
Grey fabrics with a bright spark
You may remember the phoenix that rises from the ash. A colourful bird setting off for a new life, fed by the remains of yesterday, which it leaves behind. You can image, like the phoenix, adding just a spark of a bright colour like yellow, orange or red can give your soothening, grey fabric an entirely new layer of meaning. Combining grey fabrics with a variety of wax prints, designers at Vlisco have been creating a wide range of grey wax fabrics for you to choose from.
Lion fabrics
Classic grey lion fabrics include the ‘Okla Ete Ablotsi’ (a.k.a. the ‘Tsahevi’, ‘Congés’ or ‘Sac a puces’) and the ‘Isi Agu-Nwa Agu’ (a.k.a. ‘Otukpu’, ‘Lion of Judah’, ‘Petit Lion’). According to our sources in Togo, the first name for the Isi Agu-Nwa Agu was ‘Je suis assis à mon portail’ (‘I am sitting at my gate’), as the fabric depicts a lion or person sitting at a gate. Many see this as a reference to the Lion of Judah, which served as the hereditary title of the Solomonic Ethiopian emperors like Menelik and Haile Selassie.
Classic grey fabrics
Other classic grey fabrics include the ‘Carte de Sejour’ with its straight lines and delicate organic structures, the ‘Jalousie’, the ‘Flèche New’ (a.k.a. ‘MP3 Speler’, ‘President Sarcosi’), ‘Angelina’ (a.k.a. ‘Miriam Makeba’, ‘Addis Ababa’), ‘21 States’ (a.k.a. ‘Back to Land’, ‘Toll Gate’), the ‘Linoleum’ (a.k.a. ‘Mari Ingrat’, ‘round table’, ‘Leidse ruit’) and ‘Bonso’, a heritage fabric that stands as an excellent example of the unrivalled craftsmanship of our artisans - a must-have for the Wax Hollandais connoisseur.
Earning new names
However, at Vlisco, we do not sit still. Hence, we have a wide range of grey fabrics that are yet to be named. New designs, that are still to earn their name and meaning, depending on what you do with them. Have you for instance seen our grey wax print with yellow leaves in a rhythmic chain of flowers, or our new Vlisco product, the WaxWax? For the WaxWax we use halftone effects that create different patterns on each side of the fabric, and we embellish one side with gold, silver or copper details.
We welcome you to come to the online store at vlisco.com, and get started on your next fashion project. For more inspiration, you can also check our lookbook. We are looking forward to hear and see what you made with our materials, so you can in turn inspire others.
