Vlisco Women’s Month 2020

Season: S1/2020

To unite is to empower
Together, we are stronger
All women, all united.

There is a story that has been told since the beginning of time. A story for women of all generations, everywhere. Sometimes whispered, sometimes sung, sometimes written. The message is always the same: sister, come and share your hardship with me, and we will rise above it, together.

FOR WOMEN’S MONTH 2020, VLISCO CELEBRATES THE POWER AND
UNITY OF SISTERHOOD IN HONOUR OF THOSE WOMEN WHO WORK
HARD TO MOTIVATE AND EMPOWER OTHER WOMEN.

There is a story that has been told since the beginning of time. A story for women of all generations, everywhere. Sometimes whispered, sometimes sung, sometimes written. The message is always the same: sister, come and share your hardship with me, and we will rise above it, together. Every daughter should hear this story. Every woman should pass it on. And it ends with an oath: to remember who you are. To remember how strong we are together.

We are ready. We are the changemakers. Let’s share our successes with each other, so we can lift each other up. When one thrives, we all thrive. Let’s celebrate the power and the unity of sisterhood.  For we really are stronger united.

Paule-Marie Assandre

PAULE-MARIE ASSANDRE (IVORY COAST) IS THE CREATOR OF BODY ACCEPTANCE (2012), A DEVELOPMENT AND SELF-ACCEPTANCE PROGRAMME THROUGH BODY EXPRESSION.

Paule-Marie uses the art of dance to unite and empower women in the Ivory Coast. It is a lot of work for a woman today to be able to see herself without judgement that has been imposed on women by culture or society. She wants women to fully accept themselves, detached from the eyes of others. Dancing made her find her grace, her value, and all women should be able to find themselves.

Melissa Sharufa Amisi

Melissa Sharufa Amisi

MELISSA SHARUFA AMISI IS THE FOUNDER OF THE BOMOKO FOUNDATION IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO.

The Bomoko Foundation (2017) provides information promoting early detection of cancer, and aftercare for vulnerable patients in her community. When she lost two people close to her to cancer, Melissa quickly understood that there was still a lot to be done to educate people in a community where cancer is still a taboo topic. She named her foundation Bomoko, which means “unity” in Lingala because women are stronger together to fight cancer with information, support and compassion.

Françoise Mayi Gnofam

“I work hard and won’t rest until all women and girls are educated, safe and free.”

“I work hard and won’t rest until all women and girls are educated, safe and free.”

Françoise Mayi Gnofam

FRANÇOISE MAYI GNOFAM IS FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF THE NGO SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR WOMEN AND DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN (PAFED) IN TOGO.

She defends, protects and promotes the rights of women and children in her community. Seeing the abuse women and children go through on a daily basis made her so angry. Françoise chose to transform that anger into action. She is committed to women because she believes in the power of sisterhood. She believes that together women can face discrimination and violence, and create an environment where the rights of all are respected.

DR JOANNIE MARLENE BEWA IS THE FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF THE YBLA, THE YOUNG BENINESE LEADERS ASSOCIATION (2010).

She is a physician and researcher from Benin, a global advocate for girls and women. Her work focuses on sexual and reproductive health, education and gender equality. She encourages young women to continue to excel in their area of competence and expertise, to be a leader and to participate actively in their community, to know their rights and to exercise these, and finally to know that there aren’t any limits or barriers stopping women, old and young, from achieving their full potential.
