Wax Hollandais

To date, Vlisco is the only brand that still produces authentic Wax Hollandais fabrics. Our designs – often seen as works of art – come to life through our traditional wax-based technique, making every printed yard truly unique.

Vlisco is also known as ‘Wax Hollandais’, its most popular and beloved product. ‘Wax’ refers to the resin that is used to create the design and ‘Hollandais’ to the Netherlands where this fabric is originally – and still – produced since 1910.

The designs are always mirrored on the front and back of the cotton cloth fabric. With the use of the special wax printing technique, the pattern is applied to the fabric. First, two engraved copper rollers print a layer of melted wax on both sides of the fabric. Then, the fabric is dyed with the base colour; the ink gets onto the places no wax is applied. Next, the first and/or second colours are added. On average, a Wax Hollandais fabric passes 27 steps before it is ready. Click here for a more detailed explanation of this unique process.

The range and combination of colours used in Wax Hollandais is extremely varied and emphasizes the unique styles of Vlisco fabrics. One of the colours is often used to highlight a natural bubbling effect, which gives a unique and lively appearance and authenticates every yard of Wax Hollandais.
